Calling on all Marines, Air Force, family and friends. I need your help. I have requested pictures of the “Fallen Heroes”. I need everyone to take a little time to please go through your old pictures to see if you have a good face view of any them.
I have totally forgotten about a good place to look for any of the “Fallen Heroes” is in your graduation book from basic, just in case they went thru with you.
I am in need of about 17 air force guys and 5 marines. I can’t list all of the air force but for the marines they are as follows:
Ashton Loney, Daniel Benedett, Gregory Copenhaver, Antonio Sandovall and Richard Rivenburgh.
I am also including in the tribute the ones that have passed away since the operation, so if you have a good face picture of any that have passed please provide me a picture.
I would love for the picture to be in color but it really doesn’t matter, the most important thing is that we honor all of them by remembering them, and it is time to put names with the faces.
I would also to take time to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and please be safe during the upcoming New Year.
Thank you,
Al Mahan

All the Men on the Gig (Black Velvet One) were also issued the Combat Action Ribbon from the Wilson. They were also under direct fire from the Island

Someone asked if the ships participating in the Mayaguez operation recieved Combat Action Ribbons. Here's the story as I know it.
I was stationed aboard the Henry B. Wilson (DDG-7) during all three operations. I was an STG-2 at the time. During the Mayaguez mission swift boat activity was reported in the area. Normally we would have had 50 cal. installed where the torpedo tubes where to combat swift boats. The Sonar gang whould normally man the 50 cals. (we were in the Weapons Division) Because we did not have the 50 cals during the Mayaguez mission the ST's were station on deck with M-1's and M-60's to protect the ship from the reported swift boats. The Sonar gang was awarded Combat Action Ribbons for this (no one else on the ship was). Also, the crew of the Mayaguez was delivered to the Wilson in a fishing boat.
