Update to my initial request.
On my brother's (Thomas Frederick Gienger) Report of Separation from Active Duty, the last duty assignment and major command list as follows: G Co 2dBn 7thMar 1stMarDiv 11226 and under primary specialty number and title is "0331 MachGunner". I'm hopeful this information will help. |

My hope is to find information on my deceased brother Tom (Thomas F Gienger)DOD 12/26/11, who was one of the Marines to converge on Koh Tang. I do not know his battalion or company. His DOB is 5/13/54 and he would have just turned 20 at the time of the incident. At one time he had received a photograph of himself before boarding a helicopter carrying a machine gun. I would like to get a copy of the photo to give to our Mother as the original he had was never located in his personal belongings when he died. Any info, whether personal stories or photo's would be appreciated. God Bless!

I did not know this site existed! I was on the Holt as the LPO of the firerrom. I had a medical problem as was to be sent stateside a few days before this rescue. But the CO retained me a few more days to make this mission. It was so hot down in that fireroom with the ventilation set at "Circle William" that the light covers we falling out of the fixture as they deformed. I had not seen sleep for three days and when I did get a chance to get to my bunk - there was a marine in it. The deck worked just fine and it wasn't long until the marines were flown off to reunite with their company. The best to all. Dan Hoffman, please email the location of the Reunion in Cincinnati. I saw something on it in the VFW mag.

Whatever became of 1st Lt. Terry Tonkin and Capt. Cassidy? Was assigned to them as a TACP radio operator with 2/9 during this operation? Any clues?

Recently came across information regarding The Chesty Puller House, Saluda VA and would recommend taking a look at the web site. Since I can't put a link, just search Chesty Puller House.
